The 'Restaurant Island In The Caribbean'

Partially French and partially of Dutch heritage, St. Maarten/St. Martin is without doubt the restaurant island in the Caribbean, with a grand total of over 250 restaurants. A very special and unique island for sure!

Casinos, Nightlife, Shopping, Beaches – St. Maarten Has It All

The French and Dutch origins makes this island very attractive. Casinos on the Dutch side and typical outdoor terraces on the French side, as if you are in France and Holland at the same time. More than 40 beaches all around the island, including clothes optional Oriënt Beach, plenty of nightlife, hundreds of restaurants and unbelievable duty free shopping. If you'd like to know what documents are required to visit and experience this unique blend of cultural origins, view St. Maarten Entry Requirements.

St. Maarten Beaches & Nearby Island Recreation

Excursions to nearby islands such as Anguilla, St. Barths, St. Kitts, Nevis, Saba and Statia, are easy to arrange. There are some uninhabited islands around St. Martin as well, Tintamare for example: good for picnic and a day sunbathing on the beach. Golf, diving and yachting are well organized both on the French and the Dutch side. Renting a car here is not expensive and you can make most of your visit to a Ocean Clubs St. Maarten resort when you do so.

St. Maarten Island Was Once Known As The 'Land Of Salt'

The Caribs once called the island "Sualouiga" which means "land of salt." At first the Spanish were not interested in the island and it was not until 1629 that French colonists settled in the north, while the Dutch in 1631 were attracted by the salt ponds in the south. Now Spain reconsidered and occupied St. Maarten from 1633 to 1648. After the Spanish left, the Treaty of Mount Concordia was signed and the island was peacefully divided between the Dutch and the French.
