St. Maarten Island Was Once Known As The 'Land Of Salt'

The Caribs once called the island "Sualouiga" which means "land of salt." At first the Spanish were not interested in the island and it was not until 1629 that French colonists settled in the north, while the Dutch in 1631 were attracted by the salt ponds in the south. Now Spain reconsidered and occupied St. Maarten from 1633 to 1648. After the Spanish left, the Treaty of Mount Concordia was signed and the island was peacefully divided between the Dutch and the French.

Currency is U.S. Guilder and European Euro, but US Dollars are actually more common to pay for your needs. It is not easy to change other currencies, so take US Dollars with you.
